Bsuccess Summary

Felix Dennis was just like you and I, he wanted to create something to change his future and his family's future for the better. But what he found was he was just making ends meet. He decided to start a publishing company with no knowledge or experience whatsoever. He and his friend found a building that was not even suited to live in and rented this as their office. It was so bad there was a hole in the ceiling and when it rained it was drip right through into the office into buckets they placed on the floor.

The main takeaways I found from this book are:

  • Have armor-proof self-confidence in whatever you are doing.

  • Be relentless in your journey to become whatever it is you have set out to do

  • Minimize detractions and maximize your focus

  • Networking and creating a team is of the utmost importance

  • Dennis states that he got lucky, BUT also states that you create your own luck. The harder you work and the more you put yourself out the better prepared you will be for opportunity when it surfaces

  • Set goals and review them every day (I know it sounds silly but what you manifest eventually becomes reality)

  • You will have to make sacrifices. If you are a social butterfly like myself, or a movie buff, or a gym rat, whatever it may be you will have to make sacrifices. If you want to become successful and change your family's history forever, you will have to sacrifice something in your life. In my opinion, we all have "TIME" we can recapture that is wasted on social media or hanging out with friends, it just depends on how badly you really want it.

Introduction

In a world inundated with self-help books promising the keys to success, Felix Dennis'

"How to Get Rich" stands out as a refreshingly candid and unconventional guide. Dennis, a British publishing magnate who himself amassed a considerable fortune, doesn't

sugarcoat the path to riches. Instead, he offers readers an unfiltered and brutally honest account of his journey from rags to riches. In this book review, we'll delve into the key insights from "How to Get Rich" and explore how it can genuinely help you on your path to success.

Embracing Risk and Action

At the core of Dennis' philosophy is the notion that wealth is not a product of passive dreaming but of daring action. He emphasizes that the fear of risk is the greatest obstacle to success. Rather than avoiding it, Dennis urges readers to embrace risk, make bold decisions, and seize opportunities when they arise. I feel, and this is so important, I feel that He believes that inaction is a far greater risk than taking calculated risks. And I am finding this to be true more and more, the more action I take.

Dennis provides a wealth of anecdotes from his own life to illustrate this point. He chronicles his early years as a struggling entrepreneur, recounting numerous failures that ultimately led to his success. By embracing his failures and learning from them, he was able to build a publishing empire worth hundreds of millions.

The Importance of Timing

Timing, according to Dennis, plays a pivotal role in achieving success. He argues that recognizing the right moment to act on an opportunity is a skill that can be developed. Dennis calls this "the ready, fire, aim" approach. Instead of endlessly planning and waiting for the perfect moment, he advises readers to seize opportunities as they come, make adjustments along the way, and continually refine their strategies.

Dennis' own journey is a testament to the significance of timing. He shares how the success of his publishing ventures was often a result of being in the right place at the right time and having the audacity to act.

The Importance of Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is another key element of Dennis' success philosophy. He maintains that one's belief in their abilities and vision is paramount. Dennis argues that if you don't believe in yourself, it's improbable that others will invest in your ideas or follow your lead. He encourages readers to cultivate unwavering self-belief and use it as a driving force behind their actions.

To illustrate this point, Dennis narrates instances from his life where his unshakeable self-confidence allowed him to persuade investors, partners, and employees to believe in his vision, even when the odds seemed stacked against him.

The Art of Selling

In "How to Get Rich," Dennis emphasizes the fundamental importance of salesmanship. He believes that the ability to sell – whether it's a product, service, or idea – is a cornerstone of wealth creation. Dennis asserts that everyone, regardless of their occupation, is a salesperson to some extent.

Dennis' own success is a testament to his salesmanship. He shares his experiences of successfully selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door in the early days of his career. His stories of overcoming rejection and refining his sales techniques provide valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Cultivating Relationships

Felix Dennis places immense value on building and nurturing relationships throughout his career. From what I can tell when reading this book Felix would not have been as successful as he was without his mentors and partners. He shares that when you build a team each individual has an area of expertise they can add to the project. It is in this moment when you realize you can leverage other's expertise along with your own to achieve your goals. I also found that Gary Vee covers this a lot in his book CRUSHING IT, which I highly recommend reading if you want to expand your network and see how relationships can catapult your business.

He credits many of his successes to the connections he forged with mentors, business partners, and colleagues. Dennis underscores the importance of treating people with respect, gratitude, and fairness. He believes that building a strong network of relationships can open doors, provide guidance, and offer support when needed.

The book details Dennis' encounters with influential figures and how these relationships played a pivotal role in his rise to riches. His ability to establish rapport and leverage these connections offers valuable insights into networking for success.

The Power of Focus

In "How to Get Rich," Dennis advises readers to focus relentlessly on their goals. He advocates for a single-minded dedication to one's chosen path to riches, warning against the dangers of distraction and spreading oneself too thin. Dennis emphasizes the importance of setting clear objectives and staying committed to them until they are achieved.

Dennis' personal journey reflects this principle as he recounts how his unyielding focus on publishing and advertising enabled him to build a media empire. His relentless pursuit of excellence within his chosen field showcases the power of dedication and concentration.

The Cost of Wealth

Dennis doesn't shy away from discussing the sacrifices and challenges that come with the pursuit of wealth. He acknowledges the toll that long hours, stress, and relentless ambition can take on one's personal life and well-being. He urges readers to be prepared for the sacrifices they will need to make and emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance.

I found the information below surprising. I feel that it may be misleading. If you are 35-39 and your net worth is $600,000 most of this net worth is probably build into your house. Having a large net worth that is solely based on an asset that is not generating income is not much of an asset at all. Plus if you wanted that liquid cash you would have to sell your home and then purchase another one or rent. This typically is only good for individuals who are downsizing or headed into retirement.

By candidly sharing the drawbacks of wealth accumulation, Dennis provides a more balanced perspective on success. He advises readers to carefully consider what they are willing to sacrifice and what truly matters in their pursuit of riches.

Final Thoughts

What I liked about How to Get Rich was how Felix doesn't sugarcoat his advice on how to achieve success and create wealth. He doesn't deliver the information like some other books where it feels cookie-cutter.

He gives it to you raw and tells you that the journey to riches comes with risk and you need to develop self-confidence as you go along. Dennis also brings up the fact that you need to take massive action. I found this similar mindset and delivery when I read The 10X Rule, By Grant Cardone. Both Cardone and Dennis have similar views that just because you dream something, just because you think something, you WILL NOT get to your destination unless you take ACTION.

All the points Dennis touches on emphasis on timing, salesmanship, relationship building, and laser focus provides a roadmap for those seeking to change their family's history and find their path to wealth. However, he doesn't ignore the sacrifices and challenges that accompany the pursuit of riches, reminding readers to consider their priorities carefully.

In the end, "How to Get Rich" by Felix Dennis is not just a book about accumulating wealth; it's a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and unconventional thinking. It challenges the conventional wisdom of success and inspires readers to chart their course with audacity and purpose. If you're ready to challenge your beliefs and embrace a different perspective on wealth and success, this book is a must-read that can genuinely transform your approach to achieving your goals.
